Starting a New Business at 55

spoon full of powdered mushroom supplement above yellow bowl Diving into the world of medicinal mushrooms and their remarkable benefits has been a thrilling journey for me, the founder of West Wolf Medicinals. I believe it's never too late to pursue your dreams, especially when they revolve around something as impactful as harnessing the power of nature for our well-being. Join me as I share my personal insights and experiences in the realm of health and wellness, focusing on the transformative potential of fruiting body mushroom supplements to elevate your health and vitality. At 55, I am finally doing what I’ve wanted to do since I was 18. These days, instead of waking up to face a day of managerial nightmares or Ground Hog Day events, I wake up in the morning knowing everything on my to-do list is my own. In the morning, I hike with my dogs, maybe in the mountains or just along the creek behind my house. Later, I might make products in the facility, write a blog, or meet with my husband and our mentors to talk about strategy and vision. Maybe I’ll spend the afternoon making calls and doing the actual work of selling mushroom supplements — but then again, I might decide to spend it on the farm, digging in the dirt and growing veggies. The point is I am finally living for myself. I feel happy. I feel excited. I feel challenged. People are afraid of making a career pivot late in life because they think, I put in so much work already — it’s too late. But I’ve learned taking a few steps back in order to move forward is not only okay; it’s also exciting. For me, starting a mushroom brand now is already paying off in happiness. My love for nature and its complexity and possibilities began when I left NYC and visited the Rocky Mountains in Colorado as an 18-year-old.  Health and education were instilled in me from childhood by my mother. She wasn’t a Jane Fonda, but she played tennis several times a week. On weekends and all summer, we would go as a family to the courts, and later I went to the track and field to run, play, and compete. It instilled in me the value of listening to your body and being healthy, strong, and active. I was sent to the most prestigious private high school in our district to access a better education to compete in corporate America (whether this ended up being true is debatable!).

Taking a Few Steps Back in Order to Move Forward Is OK

Unfortunately, I didn’t want to become a corporate executive like my father. I was expected to succeed in this world with my strong education. But by this time I was obsessed with NYC, taking the bus to art shows, fashion houses, and at night restaurants and clubs. This was the ’80s when the downtown art scene and clubs like Palladium, Area, and Danceteria were happening. At ages 14 and 15, I was regularly staying out until 1 in the morning, hanging out in the same spaces as the young Madonna and Grace Jones in her unitard and hoodie. My parents had other problems and weren’t deeply concerned. When I got to college, I chose NYU so I could stay in the city that I loved. My parents were thrilled to have a pre-law student. However, I wasn’t happy. I felt out of place with the kids from the Bronx and Queens as they shared their aspirations to be corporate attorneys or ambulance chasers.  That winter, I visited the West and had a breakthrough. I was stunned to see the Rocky Mountains for the first time. Do people live like this? Well, the friends I was visiting at the University of Colorado in Boulder did! I decided then and there that I would transfer. I was paying my own way anyway. My parents were, let’s say nicely, less than thrilled. As my mother commented, you don’t downgrade in universities. But I was on my own in a whole new world — off of pavement and under the starry skies.

Forced to Reconsider

I had a 20-year career in publishing, most of it my own way. Although I returned to the East Coast after years out West, I decided to keep the independent spirit that I honed while experiencing hiking, telemark skiing, and camping. At the publishing company that I founded, I was the owner of a beloved and historic community newspaper. It was challenging and took an independent spirit to save the weekly newspaper from bankruptcy and bring it forward into the modern, digital print world just emerging at the time. I made an OK living, mainly enjoying the lifestyle at a glamorous and yet strangely close-to-nature location — Fire Island. I wasn’t tied to the corporate world or living a 9-5 existence like my father.  Despite all the benefits, all those years in the publishing world were a terrible pressure cooker. The stress of selling ads and putting out fires was unrelenting. On top of this, the publication was seasonal, so every year I had to hire new reporters and stretch out a 4-month salary to 12 months. On top of the stress, I was working in environments where everyone wanted something from me, and I didn’t have a community in which to commiserate.  Finally becoming a mother changed my view again, and had me looking West. After several years of navigating the NYC landscape with two little boys, I was getting exhausted. The constant pressure of what talents they have, what languages they speak, and what top school they attend just felt too much. And after saying farewell to yet another of many dear friends, I decided it was time to explore saying farewell to the city myself. This feeling of not fitting into the city’s barometer of success — money— forced me to reconsider how I wanted to live the rest of my life. Do I want to live in this materialistic culture and bring my sons up in it? I’ve since read about something called QTL, or quality time left. It’s a realization, usually sparked in midlife, that now is the time to leverage your experience to pursue what you really want while you still have the wherewithal, desire, and connections. This is a good way of saying that I decided I needed to use my QTL to make a pivot. In February 2014, I announced that I would sell my publishing business and we would explore as a family leaving the city and moving West.

I Decided: There’s No More Time for Stress, Regret or Hesitation

By buying land, farming, and launching this company, I decided, there was no more time for second guesses. My new mantra now is “I’m so lucky,” and when I wake up each morning, I remind myself what a privilege and a pleasure it is to be presented with the day’s challenges. Maybe I’m being loaded with marketing demands. Or maybe I’m struggling with learning another new software to meet the challenge of being in a whole new industry. But what a pleasure it is I have a small piece of land to organically farm. That I have my own small mushroom company is bringing healing to people’s lives! It is a pleasure to be of benefit to the greater world. I am sure there are people in my network who look at my business and think, What does she know about the mushroom world? I’m not worrying about it.  My gateway to fungi was farming mushrooms. We took courses, set up a laboratory, grow room, and incubation chamber, and learned all there was to growing fungi for our local community. You might be an important supplement person with a million-dollar company, but I believe in my ethics and ability to find answers, relate to people’s health journeys, and source real, natural medicine with real benefits. I know in the young and wild world of fungi there are plenty of people who like and respect what I’m doing. I’m not the only newcomer. I make less money than I used to, but my new work has opened a front row to creativity more rewarding than anything I’ve ever experienced. Of course, there are still the day-to-day stresses and headaches of running a small business, and I’m now finding myself back on the computer way more than I wanted. But instead of viewing each setback as a catastrophe, I view it as a problem to be solved. I sleep at night.
